What is the difference between single-phase and three-phase power of ev charger?

2023-11-01

When a new energy vehicle owner plans to install a home charging post, there is one action that must be taken - and that is to find out whether the grid route in their neighborhood is single-phase power, or three-phase power, and if the latter can be supported, higher power can be provided and charging will be faster.

So what is single-phase power and what is three-phase power? Which one is the most suitable for new energy car charging post? Many people do not know this. Therefore, the author through this article, for you to carefully sort out some, come to understand it!

What is single-phase and three-phase power?
Our daily use of the circuit is mainly by the fire wire, ground wire and zero wire combined with each other.

Fire wire is used to energize, wire color is generally red, is the main power line; zero wire is used to form a current circuit, wire color is generally blue; ground wire is also known as lightning line, used to protect the circuit, wire is generally yellow. In a set of lines, the fire line to provide voltage as well as current through the zero line, forming a complete circuit to ensure the normal use of appliances.

Single-phase electricity, as the name implies, has only one phase wire, and its wires are composed of a fire wire and a zero wire;
Three-phase electricity, it has three phase lines, its wires include three fire wires and a zero wire, that is, three-phase four-wire.

The main difference between the two is that the AC voltage is different. Single-phase power is 220V, which is mainly used for home electricity or office computers, while three-phase power is 380V, which has advantages in power generation and electrical energy conversion, and is generally used for power distribution or higher power equipment, such as industrial scenarios.

Single-phase and three-phase power can be interconverted between:

* A fire wire and a zero wire from a three-phase line can be converted to three-phase power, because the voltage of either fire wire and zero wire is 220V.

* Single-phase power needs to be boosted if it is to be turned into single-phase power, which can be achieved by an inverter or a one-way inverter to turn the AC 220V voltage into AC 380V voltage.
